July 12th Meeting PDF Print E-mail

On July 12th, the West Texas Linux Users Group had its July meeting. The first presentation was by Scott Fritz talking about his experience at the MoodleMoot conference last month. Next up was Scott Blaydes and his presentation on automating ssh logins using ssh key pairs and ssh agent. At this point we had breakout sessions where some covered using PuTTy with ssh key pairs and others worked on using gpg encryption with Thunderbird. It was a good meeting with great discussion. See you next month.

Review of ACU auction PDF Print E-mail

One thing that I missed when I moved back to Indiana was the ACU computer auctions. While in Abilene, I had attended so many of the auctions that I began to recongnize the student working even outside of the auction setting. One time while registering, the student worker knew my first name without even looking it up. The first auction since I have been back in Texas was last Saturday the 26th, and I made sure I was there with some money in my pocket. I had looked at the listings so I knew what I wanted. While I did not find the deal I wanted, a dual G5 Mac tower for under $200, I did pick up a few Dell Optiplex GX270s. Look forward to more information on the WTLUG site if I have any problems installing Linux on these machines. UPDATED 07/04/08 NOTE: I have already gotten CentOS loaded on one of the Optiplex GX270s. One thing you need to do before loading Linux, is upgrade the BIOS to A07, which can be downloaded off of http://support.dell.com. The machines that I got had A03 on them and it has known video problems on Linux.

Community Choice Awards PDF Print E-mail

Hi from SourceForge.net! We (probably) haven't met.  I'm Ross Turk, Community Manager.  I got your name off of the list of LUG contacts at www.linux.org/groups.

I wanted to drop a quick note about something that your members might be interested in.  Nominations are officially open for the 3rd annual Sourceforge.net Community Choice Awards. This year, for the first time, the awards will be open to ALL open source projects, not just those that count SourceForge.net as home.

The nomination period is open until June 20th, then there are 6 weeks of voting on the finalists for each category.  It leads up to the awards party during OSCON at the Jupiter Hotel in downtown Portland on July 24th.  Last year it was a pretty big deal, with over 500 open source people attending.  It's not a boring awards ceremony...we try to make it wide open and fun, with food and drink and geeky prizes.

Open Source Symposium PDF Print E-mail
Written by Scott Fritz

On Saturday April 26, 2008, Scott Blades, Kent West and myself made the trek to San Angelo for the first Open Source Symposium. There were presentations on many different subjects. The first presentation that I attended was on Linux, Apache, mysql, and PHP applications for use in K-12 education. This presentation was suppose to present the use of Moodle and Joomla in K-12 education, but instead ended up being a presentation that bashed Microsoft, Apple and other major software companies in favor of using open source software. Presentations that try to promote open source by bashing everything else tend to leave a bad taste in my mouth.
