The March meeting was held on Saturday March 14 with a few key members present. I am afraid that spring break may have keep attendance down. There was discussion about the Texas Open Source Symposium and if it was being held this spring. The group seemed willing to help with the symposium if it is held here in Abilene during the fall. There was also discussion of free alternatives to CPanel with the consensus that ispconfig maybe the solution. |

In this online article ZDNet named Joomla the leading platform for creating online communities placing it ahead of Drupal and the rest of the competition. One of the factors leading to this pick was the extensive library of extensions available for Joomla. Currently the WTLUG website is running on a Joomla platform which has provided us with a rich easy to manage system. |

WOW, what a turn out. I expected the turn out for this meeting to be low because of Valentine’s day, but we had one of the largest groups of the last 6 months. We were had two new members show up for the meeting this month along with one of the founding members Mike M.
Scott B treated us with a presentation about the CHOAS Linux distribution, which is one of his pet projects. Scott currently helps with testing of different parts of the CHOAS distribution and answering questions. After the meeting we adjourned to Taco Buenos to fill our bellies and continue discussion. |

The October meeting of the West Texas Linux Users Group (WTLUG) went well.
We spent most of the meeting discussing Joomla!, a popular open-source Content Management System (CMS).
Maintenance of a web site can be made easier with the use of a CMS. A CMS provides a "point-and-click" interface for adding content to a web site, helps to enforce a standard appearance across the web site, and makes it easier to manage various levels of access by content providers (such as allowing one author to submit content which must then be approved by an administrator before appearing on the web site, while another more trusted author may both submit content and make it appear on the web site, and etc). This WTLUG web site is powered by Joomla!
One of the most significant lessons learned about Joomla!, as expressed by at least two meeting attendees, is that the nomenclature used by Joomla! simply does not make sense; Joomla's phraseology just is not intuitive. Once that hurdle is crossed by the aspiring Joomla! administrator, things start to fall into place.
We worked on a live web site (http://www.northfifthandgrapechurch.org), giving us hands-on experience as we learned.
We took a quick field-trip across the hall to the office running the WTLUG web site, where we were shown some aspects of various Joomla! templates.
Near the end of the meeting, a brief presentation was made on Mahara, an e-portfolio system.
All had a good time; hope to see you at the November meeting. |
